La Petite Mort Gallery presents

Charlene Walker: More Vicarious Travels

Salt Plains, acrylic on board, 14 inches x 32 inches.

October 12-18, 2012

Vernissage on Friday October 12, 7-10 p.m.

This theme developed organically. Initially, I was very taken with my friend’s travel photos. They showed me mysterious landscapes that I had never seen in real life. I felt the need to experience these places and I did that through painting. Since then, the idea has taken on a life of its own and I am now always on the lookout for interesting travel photos.

Most of these paintings are based on travels to Machu Pichu, the Rockies and Mount Kilimanjaro. Despite the disparate locations, the similarities are striking. When fog obscures the landscape, you can’t tell if you are in Canada or Peru. There is a dream-like quality to the paintings that takes them a step towards the abstract and away from the figurative.

Try to place yourself into the paintings like I did into the photos, and maybe you’ll feel the wind in your hair too.
